7th White Nights Kendo Festival Report


During 17-20th July 2008 7th White Nights Kendo Festival had been carried out in St.-Petersburg. 70 kendoka’s from different parts of Russia participated to in mentioned above Festival.

Under the tradition the Festival consisted of two parts: seminars, conducted by Japanese sensei’s, on 17-18 July and Tournament on 19-20 July.

Top-level masters from Tokyo, Japan carried out the seminars:
WATANABE Tadashi sensei, 7 dan Kyoushi
HAYASHI Hiromi sensei, 6 dan
SONODA Kouji sensei, 5 dan

All participants were divided into two groups: the ones who have Dan degree and the ones who have Kyu degree. Therefore sportsmen who practice kendo few months received a possibility to participate in seminars just as more advanced kendoka’s who are in kendo for several years.

WATANABE sensei conducted lessons in the first group (Yudansha), HAYASHI sensei and SONODA sensei – in the second group (mudansha). Seminars were very rich, sensei’s demonstrated and explained a lot of nuances of attacking and counterattacking techniques (waza). During the seminars sensei’s over and over paid attention to accuracy of waza implementation and blow effectiveness (yuko datotsu). At the same time sensei’s taught Russian kendoka’s how to repair and clean shinai and bogu. So during 4 days seminar (also seminars were conducted on 19-20th July mornings) different aspects of kendo including etiquette (rei) and judging (shimpan) were touched at the time of seminar.

19-20th July were carried out following Championships:

  • Kyu Cup Individual Championships;
  • Ladies’ Individual Championships;
  • Dan Cup Individual Championships;
  • Team Championships.

On the Opening Ceremony consul general of Japan in St.-Petersburg Mr. KIDOKORO Takuo*4; the head of Japanese sensei’s delegation, *WATANABE Tadashi; President or St.-Petersburg office of Russian Martial Arts Union, KUZMIN Mikhail; Representative of Russian Kendo Federation, SOLODOVNIKOV Andrey; President of St.-Petersburg Kendo Federation, KALASHNIKOV Igor had a floor with salutatory speech.

In the conclusion we would like to kindly thank our sensei’s: WATANABE sensei, HAYASHI sensei, SONODA sensei, who could find a possibility to come and carry out very interesting and rich of new information seminars.
Also we would like to thank Andrey Solodovnikov for his support and help for the Festival holding.
And we would like to thank everybody, who could come and participate in White Nights. Unfortunately, for about a quarter of prospective participants had not come, despite of such situation, number of participants reached 70 people.
